Trionium Yellowhammer Challenge - Information, terms and conditions

Got any questions? email rob@trionium.com

When?
You can make your attempt at any time between 1 January and 31 December in the year that you have applied-for. Entries cannot be deferred to a later year - they expire at the end of the year. You can attempt the Yellowhammer Challenge on multiple occasions - if you wish!

Possible dates to avoid in 2021:
Friday 24 - Sunday 26 September - Trailwalker UK (Oxfam)

How long?
To gain the Yellowhammer Challenge Medal, you must finish the Challenge in less than 20 hours. Members of the support crew can also apply for the Yellowhammer Challenge medal.

Is it a relay?
Nope! To gain the medal for completing the Yellowhammer Challenge, you need to have done the whole thing!

WhatsApp Group
A Yellowhammer News WhatsApp Group exists to allow you to keep up-to-date with news from attempts on the YHC. Send your mobile number to the email address above.

How do we report a successful attempt on the Yellowhammer Challenge?
After your successful completion of the Trionium Yellowhammer Challenge, you should email the organiser (rob@trionium.com) with the following details: Date of attempt; start time, finish time, total elapsed time; names of those that completed the whole distance; name(s) of support crew/team-members who did not complete the challenge. You must also include another form of evidence (screen-shot or link to Strava/Garmin event, GPX file, or similar - only one required to be submitted per team - Strava link preferred). For the avoidance of doubt, please state the number of medals you feel you deserve - maximum of six per team, including support crew medals! You must include your postal address, for mailing of medals. Please also include any links to write-up/blog/video etc. Once the information has been received and verified, your successful attempt will be recorded on the 'Entrants' page.

What happens if we get lost?
Navigation is up to you - find your way back onto the course and keep going. You will not be penalised for 'bonus miles.' However, you must not seek any kind of shortcut on the course. At the end of the day, you must have travelled at least 100km by your own muscle power, from the start of the course to the finish.

Where's all the information on the course?
We have debated whether we should add additional information, and have decided against it. Planning for the event is up to you - you decide how you are going to do it and where to meet your support crew. That's more than half the fun.

Why does it cost £100 to enter per team?
The cost for a team of up to four includes four medals for the runners and up to two for the support team. The runners will also receive embroidered technical caps - delivered after 1 June. Other costs for the organisers include public liability insurance (provided by the Association of Running Clubs), advertising costs (advertising on Facebook is not free and amounts to around £1000 for each event), postage, reconnaissance and other administrative costs. The race fees do not cover the race expenses.

Couldn't we just form a team and go and do this ourselves without paying an entry fee?
Certainly! However, you won't have finished the official Yellowhammer Challenge, you won't be recognised on the web page, you won't have the option of including your race report on the webpage for future competitors, you won't have the medal and embroidered cap, craic on the WhatsApp group and support from your fellow competitors and the organisers. If you do decide to run it independently, please send us an email to tell us how you got on!

Where's the money going?
The event is subsidised by other races in the Trionium series of events. Trionium made a £1000 donation - on behalf of the race - to the RSPB in 2020. Trionium will make a donation in 2021 to the RSPB on behalf of the Trionium Yellowhammer Challenge, to help conserve the Yellowhammer and other at-risk birds. The race is otherwise not affiliated to the RSPB in any way.

Team size?
Your team must be composed of two, three or four persons. A team must consist of at least two people - lone participants are not permitted. If, in a team of two, one of the participants drops out, the remaining participant must also retire from the attempt.

Does the team leader have to tell you the names of all of the team members?
No. You can enter a team before you have all your team members in place. Also, team members might change before the day with illness/injury/life, so we don't ask for all entrant names. However, after the race, please tell us the names of all successful finishers for our 'Roll of Honour' on the web site.

Team leader role
The team leader is the person who applies on behalf of the team to take part in the Yellowhammer Challenge. The team leader will be the only point of contact between the organisers and the team - the team leader is responsible for disseminating any information on the Yellowhammer Challenge to the team and to the support crew.

Can we do it in the reverse direction?
Yes you can (following requests to do this in 2021). It's no easier though, and the 'traditional' route, finishing at the sea in Newhaven, has a pub within 100m of the finish!

Training?
Unless you are already very fit, you will struggle! We would suggest that you are comfortably able to run 50k (at your own pace), with stops every 10km, before you attempt the Yellowhammer Challenge. Do not go into the Yellowhammer Challenge unfit, ill or injured - you will regret it!

Blisters
Blisters should be a major concern going into a 100km run! We advise you to take multiple actions to avoid blisters:
Toughen up your feet, either by going barefoot as much as possible, and/or using balms/salves/creams/rubs/alcohol (external) to toughen up the skin on your feet.
Use a proven sock/shoe combination that you know works for you. Some swear by double layer socks, some by two pairs of socks, some by synethic, some by natural.
Consider using a lubricant such as vaseline or Body Glide on the soles of your feet.
Do not try anything new on the day of your challenge!
Keep your feet dry if possible, or change into dry socks/shoes whenever possible.
Do not allow your feet to get too hot or too sweaty.

The following have been mentioned... Gehwol foot cream, Stride Out foot oil, Inji inji socks, Leukotape

ITRA points?
The event will not be registered with ITRA in 2021.

What to wear?
You will need to wear clothing appropriate to the forecast weather conditions, as well as the changing temperatures over the course of a day, as well as dealing with sweat and heat generated from climbing hills. Test your clothing combinations in real conditions before starting the Yellowhammer Challenge for real!
We strongly urge you to invest in a good running rucksack or drinks bottle holder, and urge you to become thoroughly acquainted with it!

Sun protection
Use lashings of sun protection - creams, hat, shirt etc. Sunburn or sunstroke could end your attempt - and see you ending up in hospital: not good.

What to bring/kit
At the very least, you should carry the following:
Charged mobile phone and/or appropriate power-bank.
Whistle.
Appropriate clothing.
First-aid kit (per team)
Hi-visibility vests must be worn at night when on or crossing any road.
Torch/head torch for night walking (check your batteries!)

Minimum age
The minimum age to attempt the Yellowhammer Challenge is 18 on the day of the attempt.

Deadline?
There is no deadline for applications. But when it's full, it's full!

Support crew role
The support crew has a crucial role to play, including the following functions:
Transporting the team to the start;
Meeting the team at each support point to provide food, drinks, clothing, massage, first aid, support etc;
Collecting any team member who cannot continue (under no circumstances should any injured runner be left unattended);
Welcoming the team to the finish;
Transporting the team home or to a dispersal point.

Littering and rubbish
Anyone found littering will be disqualified. Ideally, pick up any litter you find and bring it with you. Let's leave the course cleaner than we found it!
Take your trash (and waste) away with you - please don’t use the bins along the route. Give it to your support crew. Recycle wherever possible.
We strongly urge you not to use single-use plastics. Invest in a 10L water carrier, give it to your support crew and refill your water-bottle from that at every support stop.

Spirit
You agree to undertake the Yellowhammer Challenge in the Corinthian Spirit, not seeking to gain any unfair advantage, nor cheating in any way. You agree to behave decorously and politely to all fellow users of the route, and agree to follow the Countryside Code. You agree to keep noise to a minimum when passing through residential areas at early in the morning and at night.

What is 'Trionium'?
Trionium is the name given to all of the events organised by Conferio Ltd, including the Knacker Cracker, Leith Hill Half Marathon, Irish Sailing and Mountaineering Adventure Challenge (ISAMAC), Midsummer Munro and Bath Hilly Half. All are tough, spectacular events, worthy of the 'Trionium' name. They are organised by Robert McCaffrey, as a hobby, and between them have donated over £65,000 to charity over 15 years.

Media
All media (images, film/video, sound recordings) taken of participants will be useable by Conferio Ltd, its licensees and those authorised by it, and its successors, in perpetuity, without without compensation or credit. This is just a standard form of words used by many race companies, and doesn't mean that you've sold your soul to the Devil. It just means that we don't have to come and get everyone's permission if we want to use a photo of you, for example on a website.

Refunds
Refunds are not available under any circumstances. Entries are not transferrable. Entries are not deferrable to a future year.

Non-liability
Entrants agree that the organisers will be not be held responsible for damage or loss to any personal property, for any accident or injury (up to and including death) howsoever caused, nor for any additional costs involved in participating in the Yellowhammer Challenge, to the extent permitted by law, provided always that nothing shall exclude liability for death or personal injury caused directly by the negligence of the organiser or its agents. The event organiser will have no liability to the participant for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption, or other loss of business opportunity, nor for any other costs involved in participation in the event.

Troll policy
Trolls will be banned, deleted, cancelled, blocked, turned off (etc). Please take your negativity elsewhere!

Fitness to take part
You will be responsible for monitoring your own physical condition prior to and during participation in the event. You undertake the Yellowhammer Challenge entirely at your own risk.

Data and privacy
We will collect data to allow us to administer the Yellowhammer Challenge and to communicate with you. You give us permission to share this data with those agencies that require your data to help keep you safe (emergency services, medical personnel). Your data will be published as part of the ongoing 'results' of the event. Your data will not be passed to any third-party without your express consent.

Any pub you can recommend at the end in Newhaven?
We will suggest a visit to the Hope Inn, which is 100m from the end of the event (you run past it just before you finish). The beer is good and the welcome very friendly. The fish and chips come highly recommended!
