2nd year!

"It was a little warm, to be honest."

"Tip for the uninitiated: Can be good to change shoes part way through to get rubbing in new places, but change from low to higher drop, or your Achillies will stretch and that's bad news - Learned the hard way."

[from Paul Squires] "Absolutely could not have done it without our support crew! The absolute legend that is Chris Jones. Thank you brother, you were awesome!"

"Paul Squires glad I could help but it was the three of you dragging yourselves up the never ending hills and grinding out the miles that got you to the finish. Top effort by you all, my hats off to you guys." [from Chris Jones]

2nd year!

A true experience of endurance with conditions playing a large part in the level of effort required. Wet, cold and windy on the exposed, yet beautiful, South Downs Way made this attempt a greater challenge than our run last year. Ups and downs of the route were more than matched with the ups and downs of the team, but great team spirit and determination got it done!!

414 Club Simon Allchin 1 August Strava Yes 00:05 Had a few navigational issues at the beginning as the GPS device went a bit crazy in the woods and had to resort to good old fashioned map reading. The first 5 hours of night running were bliss as it was a balmy 20 degrees, with a light mist and drizzle about 02:30. It was only when the sun came up we could really get a sense of the enormity of the challenge, and the heat. We could finally see what we had to go up. It seemed everytime we got to the top of a hill it just kept climbing. Truly brutal course on the feet with mainly broken flint and chalk. We went on the basis of getting your half way time, double it, then add 3 hours to get your finish time. "We are still in high spirits, if just a bit sore." 18:02:11 Simon Allchin, James Farthing: Support by Mags Farthing
#ultrashufflers Richard Hamstead 31 July GPX Yes 4.57am Hottest day of the year so far. What a great idea for a challenge and a stunning route – running fresh into the dawn across the downs was pretty special. It was a virtual challenge before every event went virtual this year due to Covid – you were ahead of the crowd – who knew! It’s certainly provided a training focus this year when everything else seems to have been cancelled – so thank you for that. Liz Crooke did a most excellent job (as support) - up at 3:30 with us and there to support at the 6 intermediate stops, running to meet us at most stops and there at the end to scrape us off the floor in Newhaven and drive us to the pub. 15:18:00 Debbie Pinder, Richard Hamstead; Support by Liz Crooke

Bussy Brigade Ivor Green 5 September Strava Yes 4.05am It was a clear, crisp morning in the South Downs, with a crackle of anticipation amongst the runners at breakfast. A 4am start granted the team, alongside the maximum alotted time, some spectacular views of the sunrise and even a glimpse of the international space station! Most running tactics went well; we mentally broke the course into four bitesize sections, whilst Simon's 'patented' banking system (a calculation of position compared to 5kmph minimum every hour) worked like clockwork. Plenty of events and quotes from the day will live long in the memory: a celestial ice cream van and miracle ginger beer to name a couple. Could not have received better support from Pete, Rich and co; I imagine the challenge would have ended very differently without their help. 14:18:15 Alice Donkin, Ivor Green, Simon Mocatta; Support by Pete Stewart and Richard Wiles-Teo
Ditton Dawdlers Toby Conlon 11 October Strava Yes 3.30am

It was quite hard. There were hills. And it was a long way. But it you want to jog through history, from hill forts to industrial plants, this is your route. What a corker. Starting at 3.30am wasn't too bad but getting the headtorches back out at 7pm was a bit demoralising. Very sad to have lost a team member, Alex, to (terrible) blisters at 65km, but she came to terms with it at The Hope Inn.
Our Crewmember Chad got us round. Chad commented: “They moaned a lot, but at least I got a day away from the kids.” A wonderful, wonderful race.

Eazy-E Bench Pilgrims Peter Costello 29 August Strava Yes 4.10am An amazing run through beautiful countryside. Started early, at 4am, with a team of three runners (Andy, Kevin & Peter) and one support (Gareth). The weather forecast was cool with a strong northerly wind and rain for the first couple of hours. It would have been perfect conditions other than the wind which was a constant factor on the exposed South Downs Way. The SDW was everything we had been promised - hilly, a hard, unforgiving, stoney surface, exposed to whatever the weather had in store, but also with long rolling stretches of softer grassy trails, and mile after mile of stunning uninterrupted views in every direction. Navigation was straight forward as the SDW has an absolutely amazing frequency and clarity of signposts at every possible opportunity. All in all, an amazing route, an incredible challenge, a wonderful day spent in the company of a magnificent team, generating extraordinary memories, accomplishing an amazing feat, the satisfaction of which we will bask in for some time to come! 15:43:03 Peter Costello, Andrew Billington; Support by Gareth Pritchard, Kevin Matthews

Putney Plodders Greg Sendell 23 August Strava Yes 00:01

We made two attempts. The first was on 20 July. Attempt 1 was due to be run by Greg Sendell & Chris Clarke but Chris picked up an injury so Greg did it anyway and Chris was the crew. Got terribly lost at the start and lost over 1 hr, also got lost on 2 further occasions adding another c 45mins.  However, finished inside the 20hr cut off, just!

The second attempt was much smoother. Greg & Chris ran together - and managed to not get lost! Plus, we found the drinking water taps along the way which was brilliant. Our crew of Sue Browne who helped get us to the start on both attempts AND then during the run, Chris’ wife Isobel and daughter Georgie were fantastic. We often stayed sat down eating and drinking far too long as the food on offer was so good! We got to the finish just before 17hrs but I forgot to stop my watch.

Many thanks for organising - it was a great experience. It was great to have a purpose given everything else had been cancelled. A lovely day and some great crewing helped.

17:02:20 Greg Sendell & Chris Clarke. Crew: Sue Browne, Isobel Lang, Georgie Clarke
Ranelagh Ultra Crew Bruce McLaren 25 July Strava Yes Midnight Started at midnight to stay ahead of a vicious cold front. Was pretty ugly even so with a grey morning turning to warm near horizontal rain from SW - unpleasant but not uncomfortable. Made it to Newhaven before the front which arrived whilst we had lunch in Lewes. Great day out. 12:57:23 Bruce McLaren, Gareth Williams & Simon Martin
Run the Downs Robert McCaffrey 15 August Strava Yes 4.40am Our prior recce of the course, particularly the start (getting out of the QE2 park) and finish (last 10k from Easing) were absolutely worth the effort. Drizzle and rain for first half, dry second half. Humid throughout. First saw the sun at 7.30pm! Finish time was twice half way time plus three hours. All very sore and tired at the end - but what a high to have completed this very tough challenge. 17:16:13 Simon Booth, Dennis Earl, Peta Earl (support), Dan Jeffries, Robert McCaffrey
