Vote for the race

On a brilliantly sunny morning, on 19 April 2009, nearly 180 runners set off on the inaugural Trionium Denbies Dorking Skyline 10k, based at the Denbies Wine Estate, near Dorking. The race was supported by Friends Provident, with facilities provided by Denbies, medical services provided by St John Ambulance and with the permission of the National Trust.

The race is very tough for the first 1.25km, featuring a climb of 180m but with the recompense of stunning views over Dorking and the North Downs. Runners then enter a long forest section, before turning at the half way point to retrace their steps, including the long sprint back down to the start, passing through the picturesque scenery of Britain's largest vineyard.

Beating the course director's original course record of 45:11, race winner Stuart Flack (34) of Epsom and Ewell Harriers posted the new course record of 40:40. In a major surprise, the second person home was a lady, Emily Alden, also of Epsom and Ewell Harriers, in a stunning time of 41:15 - once again setting the course record (the fastest lady runner would normally be expected to finish outside the top 10 in a race like this). Third home was Phillip Lewis (46) of Serpentine in 41:50, while Leonidas Athanasopolous (47) of Safans Greece was first non-Brit home, in fourth place, in 42:30. Second lady home, in 33rd place was Vanessa Gibson in 47:54, with Tessa Hodge third lady home in 48:30, in 38th place. Katie Chandler probably had the heartiest welcome, from her many friends, as she finished - last but not least - in 1:37:59.

One group - 'Team Bore' entered runners in all three races, including a 74 year-old. According to Chris Bore, "She did it sensibly, and was delighted to finish - and is now off to walk the London Loop so it must have done her good. We did have four generations (I carried my 18 month old grandson on my shoulders), and in fact there were 12 of us in our "Team Bore"(pictured below) - for 10 of whom this was their first ever such run. Our places ranged from 9th to 140th which ought to be a new record for variation within a single team."

The races (including the Dorking 5k and 2k fun run) are expected to raise over £1000 for charity.

The Trionium Skyline 10k is based at Denbies Vineyard, near Dorking in Surrey. Denbies is the largest vineyard in the UK.

Starting with a tough ascent of 120m over the first 1.5km, the course follows the North Downs Way to the half way point, overlooking Leith Hill and the Vale of Dorking while running on the very edge of the North Downs Escarpment. Returning along the same course, the final 1.5km of the run loses 120m, making for a blisteringly fast finish, while at the same time offering stunning view of Denbies, Dorking and Box Hill.

After the race you will be welcome to visit Denbies Vineyard, to take luncheon in the orangery, and visit both the vineyard shop and garden centre.

Why is this race online entry only?

The online entry fee is included in the race entry fee. The race is online entry only so that the organisers can keep control of race numbers (to ensure a well-organised race), and to streamline race administration.

Race instructions/tips

Take it easy in the first 1.5km - go all out in the last 1.5km.

Watch your feet!

This is the inaugural event - please bear with us!

I am still looking for marshals - all help gratefully received (please email me at rob@trionium.com)

If coming by car, please park at Friends Provident Social Club (there are 500 places - more than enough!).

ALL runners must pick up their running number from the Friends Provident Social Club - please note that this is a 10 minute walk from the race start itself. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the race start to collect your race number.

(The reason that it's like this is because there is a large fun run the same day, and we want to ensure that the 10k has its own facilities that are not swamped by the fun-runners). There are changing facilities at the Friends Provident Social Club.

There will be a rudimentary bag drop-off point at the race start (a tarpaulin). Don't leave anything valuable in your bag. Although there will be toilets at the race start, please try to use the toilets at the Friends Provident Social Club. DON'T urinate on the vines in the vineyard - that's a big No No!

The race starts at 10am sharp at Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking. (The 5k starts at 10.05, and the 2k fun run at 10.10).

The race is on a mix of surfaces, from concrete, to rough tracks, to tarmac, to grass, to rutted woodland trails and mud. Studs and spikes will not help you - trail shoes or normal running shoes will be perfectly good.

There is a road crossing at 2.5km/7.5km. Although this will be marshaled, you are responsible for crossing the road safely. If you need to wait to cross safely, then wait! It's just the luck of the draw: use it to get your breath back and to go faster on the other side of the road!

There is also a kissing gate just after the road. Kissing is not obligatory. Note that returning runners have priority at the kissing gate.

Tips: The first 1250m is all steeply up hill - take it a bit easy. The last 1250m is all steeply down hill - go for it!

I reckon that it takes about 10% longer to complete the course than a flat 10k.

Remember to look at the views - you will be able to see Box Hill, Dorking, Leith Hill, St Barnabas in Ranmoor, Westcott and - on a clear day - Gatwick and the South Downs.

You'll be running entirely on Upper Cretaceous Chalk (100-60 million years old).

If you want a time, show us your race number at the end of the race!

After the race you'll be able to collect your race medal and t-shirt (yes, with your name on the back). Please stick around for the prize-giving (1st, 2nd,3rd, first lady), which will take place at 11.10 at the race start (inside at Denbies if inclement).

You will be very welcome to visit Denbies shop, garden centre and restaurant after the race - the restaurant is very convivial. Please, no dirty shoes inside Denbies itself (we want to be invited back!).

The results and photos will be posted on the race web site, at http://www.Trionium.com/skyline.
